“Keep your eyes closed,” Beelzebub says, holding my shoulders and waiting until I agree. I hear him walk away and peel my eyes open.

Squinting in the direction he went, I try and catch a glimpse of what’s going on off-stage, but it’s no use. I hear a grunt and a loud squeak. Then the sound of wheels being rolled across the floor makes my eyebrows rise.

“What did you guys do?” I ask Micah and Anakin, who are standing next to me.

They both shrug and avoid my gaze. “Don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re breaking the rules by the way,” Micah says.

“Uh-huh,” I say with a smile.

B has emerged, pulling a pallet jack. On the pallet sits something massive. I can’t tell what it is as it’s draped in a huge black blanket, but my eyes widen when I see how big it is.

“What did you do?” I ask, this time with excitement edging my words. I promptly shut my eyes, pretending like they’ve been closed the entire time.

Anakin chuckles.

Sucking in a breath, Beelzebub says, “She cheated, didn’t she?”

Micah says, “Yup.”

“You may as well open your eyes. We made you something.”

I snap my eyelids open and grin like a fool. I guess I do like surprises.

His fingers grip the edges of the blanket and he shoots his dark gaze to meet mine. “Ready?”

I nod and clasp my hands in front of my chest, anxious to figure out what is underneath the blanket.

When he rips off the covering, I let my mouth fall open, gawking at the beautiful throne. Its frame is a deep mahogany. The arms and back cushions are covered in a dark burgundy material which looks soft as cashmere. A delicate, golden trim lines the cushions and edges of the chair. I hurry over to the seat, gently touching the trim, noticing that there are actually two strips of gold braided together, almost matching the weaving pattern of the tattoo Mother Faerie gave me.

Devil below, that must have taken hours and bundles of patience.

“I… I don’t know what to say,” I confess, running my hands over the soft material covering the seat. “It’s lovely.”

Beelzebub beams with pride, and Anakin and Micah high-five.

“We knew you hated Lucifer’s throne, so we thought you needed one of your own. One that really complimented you.”

Tears prick my eyes, and I sniff. “This is the sweetest gift I’ve ever received.”

Anakin scoffs. “What about the three of us?”

I laugh. “You know what I mean, Annie.” My eyes meet his, and I say, “Thank you.” I hug the three of them to me, doing my best not to smash my giant belly and letting a few happy tears slip down my cheek.

I almost can’t believe how well things have been going lately. It’s too good to be true, life can never be this easy and simple, can it? Perhaps my unease is the result of years of unrest, followed by the last half-year or so of constant drama. I keep waiting for something awful to happen when I should be enjoying this peace.
